Sovos Filing is a cloud service that prepares sales tax returns from your sales transactions. It takes on the challenging parts of tax preparation while empowering you to manage and track returns with ease, full transparency, and control until the returns are filed and paid.
How to get started
Once Professional Services set up your account, you can upload your tax data, which will begin the return preparation process.
The stages of filing a return
Every return moves through 5 workflow stages as tax data is added, edited, checked for accuracy, and then filed. Once your tax data is uploaded, you can start the return through the various workflow stages. In most cases, you can also move returns back to previous stages.
You can’t roll back returns once they are advanced to the File and Pay stage.
Ready
The return process begins here. At this stage, the data you uploaded has not yet been assigned to the return. To populate the returns, advance the return to the Adjust stage.
Adjust
All the return forms are now populated with the tax data available in Filing. The return is calculated and ready to be viewed. At this stage, you can:
-
review Sovos’ tax calculations on each transaction and make changes to them
-
move data that are not required for the current return or should be saved for a future return to Data On-Hold. If your account is set up with the auto on-hold feature, Filing will automatically check if any data needs to be withheld from the return.
-
move data from Data On Hold to the current return
If everything looks good, advance the return to the Review stage.
If you roll the return back to the Ready stage, all data assigned to the return will be removed and any edits made will be lost. When you advance the return again, any data that was removed will be reassigned.
Review
This is the last opportunity to review the return. At this stage, you can no longer edit the return so if you want to make any changes to it, roll the return back to the Adjust stage.
If you reviewed the return and agree with its content, advance it to the File and Pay stage.
Once you advance the return, it can’t be rolled back to the Review stage. This step is final.
On the pop-up, confirm by clicking Advance.
File and Pay
It’s time to file and pay the return. Once that’s done, advance the return to the Complete stage.
Complete
The return has been filed and paid, the filing process is now complete.
Amend
If you need to make adjustments to a return that has already been filed, you can amend it by following the steps in this article.
